RENOVATION PALAZZO DORIA
Volunteer Cabella Ligure Italy
I was very lucky to be in Cabella when help was needed to renovate Palazzo Doria, a 15th century castle. My main contribution was making 2 vertical sections of the existing structure and the immediate surroundings of the castle. For this we had some old incomplete sketches available, gps points that turned out not really accurate as we come close to the building, and a measuring tape. Considering that there are no straight angels in any direction it was a challenging and incredible experience!
I also helped with several smaller projects. The renovation of the staircase at the back entrance of the castle was one of them, as was the staircase connecting the basement to the first floor. This last one was especially tricky as each step had different dimensions in all directions and it was incredibly steep. Several options where investigated to make it safe for public. In the end a new frame was designed to add on top of the existing staircase. The new metal frame was a regular structure, with each support adjusted to the specific difference in height. It was designed for minimal impact, with wooden steps added on top. It is a simple and and open staircase that wil still show the beautiful old one.
A beautiful experience was the painting projects. We decided the colours of the rooms a year before the works started based on Castles in the surrounding area. When the renovation was underway the interior facades for painting and the floor where drawn out. The amazing part of the story is that when removing the current paint, workers found the original colours of the room to be exactly the same as the renovation design!
